Forest Insects and Diseases

The caterpillar of the Painted Apple moth, Teia anartoides, an Australian defoliator that was introduced to New Zealand. Development of pheromone lures by GF scientists, helped to facilitate the eradication of these moths from New Zealand forests.,Gries When insects get transported to another continent from where they normally live, sometimes they can get out of control and eat up the forests. The Global Forest Insect Quaratine Facility located at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia studies these insects to figure our ways to fight them if they do start to eat up the trees. Besides insects, we are also testing biological control agents to effectively treat forest diseases. These agents are naturally occurring in our forests.
