The decline of American chestnut trees in both Canada and the United States is thought to have resulted from the introduction of stock imported from Asia which was infested with chestnut blight (Endothia parasitica) at the turn of the 20th century. So far, attempts to breed resistance into the American chestnut have failed, but ongoing research may yet prove to be successful.
